Practical tips to help you improve your credit rating and avoid expensive high interest loans

Beware of Twitter Autoplay Videos Using Your Data

You’ve probably got a social media account, perhaps even more than one, so you are likely to be well aware of the content you usually come across; text posts, photos, vines, gifs, videos etc.  What you might not know is that Twitter has introduced an autoplay feature on iPhones and iPads which does exactly what it says; when a video appears on your timeline is will now play without you clicking on it.

If you are using 3G or 4G when browsing the site this could have serious consequences for your data usage.  Facebook introduced the same feature last year and Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Website covered the story and advised users to change their phone or tablet settings after receiving complaints from people who had been caught out with high bills.

Now we have to advise you to do the same with Twitter.  This is how:

  • On an iPhone or iPad: In your Twitter app go to your profile – click on the gear at the top of your profile and select settings – select “Video autoplay” – choose the option “Never play videos automatically”.
  • On your desktop PC: Select your profile then “settings” option – under Account you’ll see an “Video autoplay” option under Video Tweets.  Untick this box.

The same feature has not currently be introduced on Android devices but it is, in their own words, ‘coming soon’.

You might not have noticed these changes yet because the default audio setting is muted.  Therefore if you are browsing your Twitter feed and become distracted a video could be playing without your knowledge.

Tumblr, Instagram, Vine and You Tube settings are also defaulted to Autoplay with only Tumblr and Instagram muted.  If you or your children regularly use these sites whether in a browser or via an app it would be a good idea to check the settings.  Especially if you are planning on going abroad.  We all know how high data roaming charges can be and you could be in for a nasty surprise when you get home.

It’s very easy to find yourself at the wrong end of a high mobile phone bill and if you are worried about paying these and other unforeseen expenses we can help you organise a short term loan to see you through a difficult financial time.  All you need to do is fill in a simple online form and you will receive quotes within minutes.
